Is sp2 safe?

I downloaded sp2 a couple of months ago and it messed up my hard drive. I
sent it to be repaired and now I'm afraid to download it again. I can't get
sp1. It's not available. Anyone know what I should do?

What SP level do you see now if you go to start | run, type winver <enter> ?
If you don't have SP1 and want it, see

(express install for end users)

(full install for IT professionals - just means you're downloading the full
shebang, not merely the bits your computer needs).

SP2 can be easy enough to install if you have updated device drivers, a
known *clean* Windows XP install (no spyware, viruses, etc) ....what exactly
happened to your hard drive? Remember, no matter what, you need to do
regular backups of your data.

SP-1 is still available:

However there is little reason to install SP-1 since similar issues
are possible with both and most issues with both can be prevented by
making sure the computer is ready for SP-2:
