I have been trying to Install SP2 on one of my PCs, and am having difficulty.
Whenever SP2 is installed, the security center loads for the first time and
the computer locks up. I have tried installing SP2 everyu way possible.
First I did a regular windows update to install it, then I formatted and
reinstalled WinXP, then installed SP2 from the disc MS sends in the mail,
then I slipstreamed SP2 into my WinXP disc and tried to install it that way.
Each time I have the same problem. I have checked, and I have the most
current BIOS version for my mainboard, and I have run out of options to try
to get it running. I gave up and reinstalled Windows XP SP1. Anyone have
any ideas?

Are you using any Norton AV products ? Did you temporarily disable
your antivirus program if you're not using Norton prior to
installing SP 2 ?

Do you have another firewall installed ? Perhaps that is what's
causing your grief.
Did you scan the system for the presence of mal|spy|adware prior to
installing SP2 ?

I'm having same difficulties: no apparent reason for SP2 locking my computer
seconds-minutes after start-up. Yes, ad/spyware was screened and removed
before installation; yes, F-Secure Internet Sec2004 was totally disabled
before inst; yes, Windows firewall disabled because FSec has better; yes, in
support pages there are no devoce drivers listed that should cause problems.

Noteworthy, SP2 doesn't freeze during startup if Ethernet cable is unplugged
before turning power on; when cable is replugged and LAN traffic started,
system freezes again.

Microsoft.......

I have this problem when none of this software is even installed.. I
completely formatted the hard drive and installed SP2 before anything else..
and that didnt work, so I slipstreamed SP2 into my windows disk and installed
it that way, still the same problem.

This is probably a longshot.. but Im curious.. what brand of NIC Card do
you have? Do you have a high speed connection? If so, is your computer
hooked to a router? What Brand is the Router?
