SP2 Still Will not Install

I have XP Pro.

I have tried everything, scannow, safe mode, exiting antivirus and firewall,
etc., etc. (about 7-8 attempts) but I still get about 1/3 of the way through
the install and I get an error saying it is unable to copy a file ( always a
different file) the specific error is:

Copy Error
An error occurred while copying file [name of file].
Cannot copy file to destination directory. Click Retry to retry or Cancel to
cancel

The only option that does anything is cancel. Retrying just yields the same
error message.

I have tried all the suggestions of turning off the read only attribute on
that file, rename the file, etc. Nothing works.

I want to install SP2. I have it on all my other computers as the upgrade
worked fine, but not on this one.

Please help.

Steve

You can order it from here..

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

I understand that it is also available from major computer stores free of
charge..

Steve;
If it is a different file each time, you may have a dirty CD or drive.
Clean both.

Or you may have a memory problem.
Power off and reseat all memory sticks.
If you have multiple memory sticks, remove one at a time making sure to stay
at or above Windows XP Minimum of 64 mb.

I have 1 GB of memory, a 3.0Ghz pentium 4. I will try to reseat the memory,
but I don't think that is it. I would think that I would have had problems
with something else.

Also, I don't think it is the CD. When I insert the CD, it copies all the
files to a temporary directory on my D drive (I have 2 drives 60gb (c) and
200gb (d)). I don't think it access the cd after that.

Any other ideas?

I agree with Jupiter that it looks like a hardware issue
but what is the evidence that points at the *source* of the copy?
Why can't the problem be in the destination (e.g. your harddrive) instead?
Are there any entries in Event Viewer which clarify this?
If not you could try running FileMon to see if it gives you
any more clues.

Have you done chkdsk of the volume?
Do you have room to install XP into a different partition
and try to update it?
Etc.

Good luck

If I install into a different partition, will I be able to still run the
programs that are installed on the original partition?

No. The only point of doing it would be as a test to get more
information about your problem. Note that answering the other
questions I asked might give you just as equally useful information
with less work... <eg>
