I agree with Jupiter that it looks like a hardware issue
but what is the evidence that points at the *source* of the copy?
Why can't the problem be in the destination (e.g. your harddrive) instead?
Are there any entries in Event Viewer which clarify this?
If not you could try running FileMon to see if it gives you
any more clues.
Have you done chkdsk of the volume?
Do you have room to install XP into a different partition
and try to update it?
Etc.
