SP2 still won't install

Have tried windows update, full download and CD. Have tried 5 or 6 times.

It gets about a third done and I get an error that says "an error occurred,
cannot copy file to destination directory". It happens on a different file
each time. My only choice is cancel or retry. Canceling reverses the process
to that point and everything goes back to the way it was. Retrying does
nothing except give me the same error.

I have plenty of room on my drive (over 15GB).

Any suggestions?

Is your firewall, virus checker, and other similar programs turned off? Are
your peripherals off or disconnected? Are you disconnected from the web? All
that must be done first.

Did turn off firewall, virus checker, and other similar programs. Did turn
off all peripherals. Didn't disconnect from web.

Why would this give the error I listed? (Unable to copy to destination
directory.)

Not a good idea to turn of AV and firewall and still be connected to the
web. You could have been infected with a nasty in a matter of minutes.

You should disconnect from the web before doing the install. Have you
done a thorough check for malware too?

Yes, I should have said that after not working a couple of times, I ran
spybot, adaware, did a scan of the hard drive, virus scan, defragged, etc,
etc.

Still didn't work.

Something is corrupted somewhere. Start checking
with memory first. www.memtest86.com
Then start checking for your hardware's latest
drivers. <follow install instructions precisely>

Hi Steve - Did you perhaps make a CD-RW disk of the download and then try to
install SP2 from that? What you describe can occur under those
circumstances (for reasons I don't fully understand yet). If so, try
burning a CD-R disk and doing the SP2 install using that. Be sure you
"finalize" the disk (not just the session) when you burn it.

Please respond in the same thread.
