Hello,

today, I have installed XP SP2 from the WindowsUpdate server. The size
of the downloaded file was about 100 MB. After automatic installation
of it I have found out that the free space on my HDD decreased by 1.2
GB. Is it possible? In the past, I regurally installed all the partial
actualizations from the WU server.

Thanks in advance,

Milan

the sp2 update creates also file backups
c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$
restore points, new directories, files etc. this can add up.
(my $NTservice size is 367 MB) Can it all be 1.2 GB: don't
know ,my restore point is erased. You can alway add it up
for your computer.

Did for me! 1.2gb GONE.

see me post re ".NET Framework update / upgrade error
using windows update" of yesterday. I had a few 'extra
issues' as well ""

A year or two ago 40gb hard drives seemed like a 'dream',
NOW..... well, I have a 2 week old laptop that has 9gb
left on it and I have not installed office or any of my
favourite graphics programs. No wonder they are making
the hard drives bigger, it is to accommodate the service
packs and security updates.

And 5 years ago, 1.7gb hard drive? Can you imagine?
Jeeez.

I can no longer see the $NtServicePackUninstall$ type of
files in c:\windows\ - why not? I'd like to delete restore
points that are older than 3 months. - RM

NtServicePackUninstall$ are normally hidden. to view them
control panel folder options view show hidden files $
folders.

restore are normally deleted when the are 90 days old.

Don't forget also that system restore reserves per default
12% of your hard disk, temporary internet files folder can
also reserve some space. Best of all you can adjust these
reserved spaces.

And don't forget also you can compress old files ( not
used recently) by using
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CLEANMGR.EXE
open the program choose compress old files\options and
set the time period after which the files are compressed.
(They can show up has a different color they are orange on
my computer so I know they are compressed.)
