Can you boot to Safe Mode and use System Restore to roll the system
back to when it had SP2 installed ? Seems that your issue had
nothing to do with SP2 but rather with IE. If it were a hardware
issue then using Last Known would NOT have resolved the behavior you
described.
IF you can get the system booted then it would behoove you to scan
it for the existence of mal|spy|adware as these would be the most
likely culprits for what you've described. Most likely they were
already surreptiously installed on the system prior to SP2's
installation.
