SP2 stops during update

Hey.
I'm trying to update my laptop with SP2.
I have made a clean install with the install-cd's from HP - no problem
there.
But now i the beginning of the update - it says ( in danish )
"Kontroller produktnoglen" translatet to "Chekking product-key". And
then there is no response - it wont continue.
It is leagal XP ( ofcourse ). I have tryede the online version, the
full download version, conneced/disconnected to the internet. Tryed to
install/remove other update. Nothing helps.

I'we have done this update before with the same installation - but now
it's totaly gone crazy.


Also i have tryed to change the serial-key ( to the key on the
windows-label on my laptop ) with no luck.... :-(

I just had this issue one some computers at work (hanging at the SP2
installation at "Checking product key" phase), and did some googling
for this. At a web forum I found the solution. A guy named Matt had
this problem and phoned Microsoft. After a second hour session on the
phone, the Microsoft tech found the reason, it had to do with OEM inf
files not being recognized by the SP2 installation. Below is the
resolution email that was sent to Matt. This procedure also solved the
problem on the computers where I work.

1) Please go into the CMD prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe )

2) Then type cd /d %windir%\inf and make sure we are in that
directory.

3) Then type ren oem*.inf oem*.old, it will go back to the prompt
after giving you some error (Do not worry about it)

4) Then type ren oem*.pnf oem*.old1, it will go back to the prompt
after giving you some error (Do not worry about it)

5) Then goto start - run - type "%windir%\inf" and you will see
the files in the folder.

6) Then find the file by name INFCACHE.1 and take a backup of it
to desktop (by copying it to desktop) and delete the INFCACHE.1
from c:\windows\inf.

7) Close all windows and reboot the computer to safe mode and
start the installation of SP2 and it should go fine.
