After downloading SP2 on my Sony Laptop, my CDRW/DVD drive will not
recognize any type of DVD media. But recognizes all CD media. I have
reinstalled all decoders, reinstalled all drivers, physically removed drive
and cleaned. Talked to decoder manufacturer, Talked to Sony, went to QSI
website to see if any driver updates are available, (which found out that
they dont make drivers for my model, Windows does) I also noticed when
looking at the properties of a CD running in the drive, It says it is a DVD.
That really confused me.

I am just starting to look through the registry for something that looks wrong

If anyone could kindly help me, It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help!

"U2WillFall",

I'm sorry that you are running into this issue. Could you post back to this
newsgroup and thread the answers to the following questions? I will try to
help:

1. What kind of Sony laptop machine? VAIO? Model number?
2. When you go into Device Manager, is the DVD drive accurately represented?
In other words, is the DVD model correctly identified in the Device manager?
3. Still in Device Manager, are there any yellow markers in front of the DVD
components? Any unknown devices listed?

Thank you for responding in advance.

Sincerely,

Hello Pat,

It is a Sony Vaio, PCG-FRV26. I have looked at everything you have asked
me to in the past. Yes the DVD drive was represented and was correctly
identified in device manager, and no yellow markers at all. This is why the
whole thing really confused me and all of Sony, Microsoft, and all whom I
have spoke too. BUT!!! Right after I sent the original request I resumed my
quest to fix this problem. And guess what? After months of research and
trial and error troubleshooting I watched my first DVD on my laptop after
installing SP2. I almost gave up. I want to share this info with others but
don't know how to post it to where they can all see. A lot of newsgroup
topics and sections have people asking for help on this subject. So I will
just say here and hope they find it. There is probably an easier way then
the way I did it.

I thought maybe there were too many DVD decoders on my PC, So I removed all
programs that had them, (Ulead DVD player, PowerDVD5, WinDVD6, And more).
Now I have no DVD decoders. I try and play a DVD... Nothing. Then I came
across this program called "Paragon CD Emulater". I installed it. It gives
you the power to make virtual cd and dvd drives. So I made driver letters
"G" and "H" to think they are DVD drives. I had 3 choices ( CD, DVD,or
Game). I kept all other letters the same("C" and "D" are my Locals, "E" is
my memory stick, and "F" is my original DVD/CD-RW drive... So anyways I
tried to play a DVD, nothing... Ooooops forgot their were no DVD decoders.
So instead of installing a newly updated one, I installed an old one (My
original) from "WinDVD4". I just sat there in shock watching a movie start
to play... (Got up and changed my shorts, actually)

After that I installed PowerDVD5, WinDVD6, Nero, etc.... They all work
now.

It also shows a DVD drive in "My Computer".

I hope this helps others. I would like to let MS, Sony, QSI, and Intervideo
know. Even though they gave up on me. Maybe this could help them make a
patch or something.

Thanks Pat for replying and offering your help. And please pass this on to
the other newsgroups if you can. My mind is drained on this subject. Now
it's time to try and repair WindowsXP Home wireless home network problem I
seem to have. <grin>

"U2WillFall",

I am very glad to hear that you found the problem and solved it! I will
post your fix to every DVD player issue we run into on this discussion board
in the near future. Many should be able to find this posting on a search.

Thanks,
