SP2 stops installing after 4 blocks?

I was having a problem with my OS in that after uninstall and reinstall of a
hotfix, the OS was suddenly stopping seeing some hardware such as the PC
ports (for example WiFi cards were not being seen at all on plugging them in
or, obviously, on running the wizard or on reboot). I posted some messages
on some relevant forums but no MS expert had the vaguest idea what was
wrong. Mine was one of the few which got the experts completely stumped (no
responses on three forums). The whole start process stopped at the XP splash
wallpaper and Explorer wouldn't start at all. I could CAD but not start
explorer thereafter from RUN in the WINDOWS directory. It would start
explorer from the DLLCACHE directory, then close down properly, then start
properly (and I could ensure that Explorer was now running from the Windows
directory).

I did run sfc /scannow before installation and took various preventative
measures for installation over a not perfectly working installation such as
defrag, and various other checks (none of which managed to get the OS to see
the WiFi cards)

So in default of ANY alternatives I was forced to try installing SP2 to
update relevant DLLs etc. Curiously enough it crashed during the
preliminary stages when IE was looking on the Windowsupdate site for the SP2
update: When I put my cursor on the INSTALL box, it didn't turn into a hand
to install and I had to END TASK in TM to get IE running again to go to the
site again to let it run all night.

It ran all last night (on a broadband connection) and seems to have stopped
at 4 block of the INSTALLING screen (after initialising installation DONE!
line). Not sure if this means that all files have been downloaded and are
now being installed or if the system is still trying to download the SP. I
DO know that the install from CD is the better course but I habitually lose
CDs and have lost my SP2 install CD. Is the 'download SP2' option as
catastrophic as Microsoft says?? (I did have terrible difficulties with
installing S2 on a different computer and they told me to get the CD and it
all went smoothly after that)

There is still a slow intermittent clicking coming from the hard drive or
computer or something so I am not absolutely sure if everything has stopped
completely but it won't get past that 4th block.

Any idea what I should do now? Hit cancel and start again or is there
something I should do at install? Get into Safe mode with networking and
restart the install process?

Should I just let it run for a few days or is there some other course I
should follow?
