I have downloaded from automatic updates as well as manually downloaded sp2
for IT users and it stops at verifying product key, now I also try to
download automatic updates and all downloads fail now. I have just recently
reformatted my hard drive and upon installation it never asked me for a
product code and I nothing seems to work the same. Can anybody help me on
these problems I am having? Should I reformat again and try this all over
again?

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

Not sure I quite understand the question but ------- ignore if not relevant

SP2 installation hangs at "Checking product key" phase
Posted by another user who got a response from MS Support:-

There are 3 steps which we have to do to get the SP2 installed.

Steps are:

1) Please go into the CMD prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe )

2) Then type cd /d %windir%\inf and make sure we are in that directory.

3) Then type ren oem*.inf oem*.old, it will go back to the prompt after giving you some
error (Do not worry about it)

4) Then type ren oem*.pnf oem*.old1, it will go back to the prompt after giving you some
error (Do not worry about it)

5) Then goto start - run - type "%windir%\inf" and you will see the files in the folder.

6) Then find the file by name INFCACHE.1 and take a backup of it to desktop (by copying it
to desktop) and delete the INFCACHE.1 from c:\windows\inf.

7) Close all windows and reboot the computer to safe mode and start the installation of
SP2 and it should go fine.

I would check to make sure you do know what your product key is before attempting anything
especially if it's an OEM version.

If Windows XP is still installed on the computer:

If you purchased WinXP retail, the Product Key is on an orange label on the back of the
package. If you don't have the package, contact Microsoft:

If you have an OEM version of WinXP, the Product Key sticker should have been placed on
the computer tower by the retailer. Note, Microsoft will be unable to assist you with an
OEM version.

TaurArian's advice worked for me. Thanks TaurArian The files that were renamed, are they unecessary now or do they need to be reverted back to their original state?

Hi Geoffrey, you'll need to tell me which thread you are referring to before
I could answer that.
Please either provide a link to the original thread or in the alternative
copy and paste the same in this thread.
Pleased one of my postings has been of assistance.
