Hi,
I have a strange problem, I recently upgraded to sp2 on a xp pro machine.
Since then my cpu usage keeps oscillating between 100% and 0. Exactly like a
clock pulse. I used process explorer(www.sysinternals.com) and found svchost
to be the culprit. Also there wuauclt.exe is shown as a child process to that
particular instance of svchost. On suspending wuauclt.exe, everything goes
back to normal. Any ideas??? Unfortunately, I cannot disable automatic
updates because of a program called cisco clean access agent which my
provider uses to check if all computers are up to date.
Any inputs would be great..

Check for clues in your WindowsUpdate.log?

Can you at least get AU into always prompt mode?
E.g. doubleclick on the AU icon (yellow shield)
and see if you can click on Change Automatic Update settings.

Others have observed what appears to be bad packaging causing loops.
In that case, provided you were allowed to select updates individually
you might be able to bypass such problems.

I have found the same problem with Windows Automatic Updates on XP Pro.

The following blog decribes what I've found so far:
