Try a search? http://groups-beta.google.com/groups...=1&sa=N&tab=wg (Google Groups search for 80070428 OR 0x80070428 MVP OR MSFT group:microsoft.*.windowsupdate ) Torgeir apparently answered you in September when you made exactly the same post. The only thing that I would add is that it looks like a possible case of the registry being locked down (e.g. perhaps by a group policy template). E.g., see if the suggestions in this article give you any more clues: <title>You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 2</title> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148 (Google web search for permissions registry svcpack site:microsoft.com ) HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |

Yes, I did do a search and the only hit was (as you pointed out) my request
for help from September of last year. I would have thought that someone else surely would have had the same problem during that last four months, but apparently not. As I stated then, Torgeir Bakken's suggestion did not work and I never received another suggestion to resolve the problem. I even tried Torgeir's suggestion before posting this message and it still did not take care of the problem. That is why I was asking for help again Thank you for the suggestion to check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148 I will try it out and report back. I again tried Torgeir's suggestion
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose /areas services group_mgmt user_rights securitypolicy and it executed without any errors. However, it did not take care of the problem. I also tried the suggestions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148 but this apparently does not apply since "DoRegistryUpdates failed" does not appear anywhere in the log file. I have copied the entire log file. Surely someone has seen this problem before. That's why I used expressions like "looks like" and "more clues". ![]() I still think that lines like these may indicate that your registry is locked and that could be at least part of the source of your problems. Notice that we would have to know if the keys existed before the update executed to know if these messages actually implied that such a problem existed. > 28.657: CheckRegistryValue: RegOpenKeyEx for SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active > Setup\Installed Components\{FDC11A6F-17D1-48f9-9EA3-9051954BAA24} > KeyName failed :0x2 Now, do these not exist or are they just inaccessible because a key is blocked? FWIW I have the previous line but I do not have these three lines in my svcpack.log: > 31.438: ref tag c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\sp1.cab does not exist > 31.438: ref tag c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp2.cab does not exist > 31.438: ref tag c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\sp2.cab does not exist .... All those "Failed to query DriverPath" messages could indicate a similar problem. FWIW I only had one of those, for LEGACY_VGASAVE But the most obvious problems start here, which again I think could imply that there is a problem with permissions. E.g. perhaps you have permission to read the keys (which would be different from KB873148) but not allowed to change them (which would be similar but sufficiently different to cause a different symptom.) > 227.657: SceConfigreSystem failed, return 0x10 > 227.657: DoInstallation:SecurityConfigSystemCommit Failed: 0x80070428 FWIW instead of those (and the following) lines in my svcpack.log I had many lines starting like: GetCatVersion: Failed to retrieve version information from D:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{ .... Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be as clear a symptom as KB873148 was designed to handle. In your position I would be running with RegMon active during the update to see if it could show me any more specific symptoms.
