SP2 update and issues

I start off trying to download the updates (SP2 and Net 3.5 update) and I get error ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER(0X80070057). I have read about this error and it has something ro do with update Update for Windows Vista (KB972036) - August 2009 update.
I looked and they recommend uninstalling this update. When I go look up to uninstall this up it doesn't show up that I installed it. When I look up at installed updates on windows update it shows it installed on 9/2/09. I then downloaded the Windows6.0-KB972036-v2-x86 capablity program and when I run it it says this update doesn't apply to your system.

So I dont know what to do. I keep going in circles.

Any help would be great. I have looked on here and no one is mentioning the issue with Windows Vista (KB972036) - Error message when you try to install Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2008 or for Windows Vista: "ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER(0x80070057)"

I guess I'm the only one with this issue?

I'm also getting the same error message while trying to install Vista SP2.
Uninstalling kb972036 makes no difference; the instructions I got from Microsoft help did not work too...

It says I have isntalled that KB but I can't find it on my pc. I guess out of all these post we are the only ones that with this problem.
