I have installed SP2 on my HP Pavillion 9680C computer several times after
following all of the HP suggested update suggestions. Each time the computer
hangs randomly after the update untill the update is removed.

and prepared as carefully as I could. Yte the system has continued to hang
after each of the attempts to install SP-2

Unless HP has an issue with that specific model with SP-2, there is
some sort of hardware or software conflict.
Did you follow that ENTIRE checklist, going beyond drivers and
spyware?

Do you have access to another hard drive at least temporarily?
If so, swap it with original hard drive and install Windows only.
Then install SP-2.
If all works OK, you most likely have some sort of conflict with some
piece of installed software.

I do not have immediate access to a new hard disk I would need to buy one.
wouldn't there be a log or error report some where which would detail the
error?
