SP2 Update fails every time

I have tried to update to Windows XP SP2 in three different ways: from the
CD, from the MS Update website, and from the downloaded update file. All
failures exhibit the same problem: during the update, Windows is unable to
copy the following three files: ntldr, ntdetect.com, and sp2.cab. I have
even tried substituting other copies of these three files from other PCs, but
the update process is unable to copy them.

The Windows installation that I am trying to update is one that became
corrupt; it had already been updated to SP2. I repaired using the Win XP
install disc, which fixed the corruption and returned the Windows XP
installation to a non-updated state. Once repaired, this installation runs
just fine, but I wish to complete the SP2 update and return the PC to its
owner.

Any suggestions? Why would these particular files have problems? Thanks.
