I have tried to update to SP2 but the installation fails just after setting
the restore point. Included are the last few lines from svcpack.log.

642.744: System Restore Point set.
645.669: PFE2: Per File Exceptions will not be used.
648.272: SceConfigreSystem failed, return 0x14
648.272: DoInstallation:SecurityConfigSystemCommit Failed: 0x800710d9
653.109: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine
value, error 0x2
653.109: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery.
653.109: Unable to read from or write to the database.
663.664: Message displayed to the user: Unable to read from or write to the
database.
663.664: User Input: OK
747.755: DeRegistering the Uninstall Program -> Windows XP Service Pack, 0
747.755: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.
749.898: Message displayed to the user: Service Pack 2 installation did not
complete.
749.898: User Input: OK
749.898: Update.exe extended error code = 0x800710d9
749.898: Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action
compliance.

Any help woould be appriciated. I have updated 5 PC's lately and this is the
only one that I have had a problem with.

Hi

I would think you need to delete/rename the .log files in
the folder %windir%\Security\ (and maybe %windir%\System32\CatRoot2\).

I have created a batch file that does exactly this.

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database"
