Decided to bite the bullet and downloaded the IT SP2 upgrade (about 17 minutes with cable) ... I "was" running XP home SP1

Did a backup of important data as well as running a back up of my email (all to CD-RW's) .... ran a scan with AdAwareSE and Spybot .... Ran a deep virus scan with my SystemSuite5, cleaned up the hard drive, defragged, checked the registry and defragged it, you know all the normal things I do once a week with the SystemSuite5.

Then I bit the bullet ... I shut down my SystemSuite5 .... and all extras like WinPatrol and other security software I run ... and ran "WindowsXp-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe" (the full 266M download from Microsoft of SP2) (yes I put it on CD-R to pass around to all of my less fortunate friends that do not have a broadband (cable) connection) . .... expecting the worst from all of the post I have read in the last week .... I ran the file .... Surprise it ran and did just what was advertised .... not a single problem ...

Total install time of just over 25 minutes ... I did turn off the Windows Firewall (I already have one with SystemSuite5), I did have to allow connections to the changed software to the network or Internet as asked by SystemSuite ...
I have now run all the software I have on my computer and no problems .... yes the popup windows telling me about the firewall and anti-virus were a problem for about 10 seconds ... but you can turn them off ...

I will say I was worried about some very "old" software like Office 2000, Age of Empires, ect. and others I run. .... but I am sorry to say to all of the "Doom and Gloom" people out there, NO PROBLEMS... Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2 did install trouble free ... I do want to say if you maintain your system the way you are suppose to, it will make the update as easy as 1.. 2 .. 3 ...

*Do Your Maintance correctly
*BackUp Important files (just incase)
*Shutdown your third-party firewall and your virus scanner
*Shut down anything else running that doesn't need to be running (WinPatrol, TeaTimer(Spybot), or any other security software you have
running in the background)
*And just run the UpDate.

Sincere well done to you. You followed good procedures.

Now then, not every single system with XP will succeed with SP2. Example, currently there are systems with Intel Prescott processors that cannot install XP SP2.

Boy you should count your blessings. I followed the same procedure. Backups.
system restore, cleaning, defragging, etc, restarted the computer installed
SP2 Took 3 days to download with dial up. And BOOM Major melt down.
System is a paper weight. 3 days of 18 hours each and computer is running
but not the same as it was. MS SP 2 removal utility did not even work. The
fix is worse than the problem.

You should go buy a lottery ticket today!

Are you still on SP2? when you run WINVER, do you see "Service Pack 2" ?

Did you try removing SP2 via Add/Remove programs?

Assuming you had a grand failure. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350

As for following "good" procedures ... I am not new to computers, just XP. I have been working on computers since 1972 .... Just purchased a new CPU that was preloaded with XP Home ... I do miss my Win '98SE .... But after 5 years the motherboard gave up the ghost ... in a few months I will be very proficient with XP. I have a way of taking apart the OS and making it work my way and work much faster

Tip of the hat to you. I've been on computers since '73. Used Windows since version 3.0. Mini-computers well before that.
