SP2 Update hangs (or BSOD) at "Performing Cleanup"

Built a new machine using ASUS A8N32-SLI mboard and Athlon64 X2 4400+ and 2
Gb memory. Not overclocking. Have GeForce 6200 video card, and an Areca
ARC-1230 Hardware Raid card, both in PCI-x slots. All hardware works great
in Windows XP (prior to SP2 update) and Memtest86 passes.

When I try to update to SP2 (using Windows Update online), I get either a
BSOD, or it hangs up at "Finishing Installation - Details: Peforming
Cleanup". The BSOD goes very quickly, but I believe it says
"KERNEL_STACK_IMPAGE_ERROR". Reboot attempts to correct, but seems unable to
do so, so I recovered (6 times now) using an Acronis Drive Image backup. I
now have a Drive Image backup after the 100 Mb download of SP2, but before
applying the update, so I can duplicate this problem quickly, if necessary.

I have ZoneAlarm Pro installed, and Acronis Drive Image, and I tried with
both of these shut down (their background processes not running).

Can anyone suggest how to proceed from here? TIA.

I forgot to mention, this is Windows XP Professional. It is an OEM version,
so I don't qualify for free support from Microsoft. I hope sombody else has
had (and solved) a similar problem. Thanks.
