When trying to install KB828741 and KB835732 on Windows XP it keeps reporting
"failed". No other hints than that. Been searching for help but can't
locate any.

Anybody? Any ideas?

I've tried several times to install SP2. It fails around 50% through the
Install phase with an "Access denied" message. I cannot tell what file
access is denied to, so I can't go in and change properties. Help!

Here's a link to Jupiter Jones' XPSP2 install site:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

You may find some help there. I recall from the first days after SP2 a
lot of the biggest install problems were caused by
viruses/adware/spyware. Make sure your system is super-squeaky clean.

Why are you trying to install these two updates? These are both updates for
XP SP1. If you already have SP2, then these updates are already
incorporated.

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed
update (red mark) and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the
alternative, do a search for the error code.

Also further clues may be in the update log:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error
code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If
appropriate copy and paste the error codes into this thread so someone may
be able to assist you. On the other hand, you may be able to find the error
code and other suggestions by searching the Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of
update ie KB828741) and post the contents of the failed update. This may
provide further clues as to why the update failed.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

Thanks for everybody's help. When I tried to download this not using the
automatic updates site, I noticed that it was trying to extract to an
external hard drive that I only have music on. (I don't know why...it didn't
let me pick anything.) Anyway, I unplugged that external hard drive and I
was then successful at installing these 2. I then went on to install SP2.

I didn't realize at the time that these were not SP2. I didn't have SP2 so
assumed that when Windows said that I needed them, that that is what they
were.
