This is a joke right ?

You are suggesting a FirmWare update for a DSL modem after a software update on the platform
where it is most likely a TCP/IP stack problem. I lay a bet that the OP is using PPPoE
(WinPOET ?) based DSL and the stack was corrupted or replaced during the patch.

Don't put words in my mouth. I'm not suggesting anything and perhaps you
should put your Crystal Ball away until OP replies, David. I only asked if
OP had sought updates for the modem.

OK take a Fujitsu or Westell modem which are external to the PC and connect via TP Ethernet
or USB. Now, what "updates for the modem" could there be and how could this be affected by
WinXP SP2 ?

I had so much trouble with my DSL service after installing Service Pack two,
that I switched to cable modem service. Since then, I have not have any
connectivity, windows applications, internet access, or download problems.
I was using a Westell modem provided by Verizon. Not saying there was
anything wrong with the modem, but experienced connectivity problems after
installation of service pack 2. Tech support was not help either. Glad I
made the switch.

If you were using a Westell modem w/Verizon then you were using PPPoE and WinPOET. SP2 must
have bastardized the WinPOET setup thus blocking the Internet access. If you had setup
WinXP's PPPoE client or executed NUKEPOET then reinstall WinPOET then you would be up and
running. In addition, if you been suing a Cable/DSL Router then the Router would have made
the PPPoE connection not the PC and you would not have had any problems. The Router has
many advantages besides off-loading PPPoE. This includes, but is not limited to...

Sharing the one ISP IP with upto 253 LAN nodes
Many devices have 4 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet switched ports.
Simplistic or full FireWall capability
DHCP server for LAN nodes

Even with a cable ISP, I *highly* suggest you get one. As always, I suggest the Linksys
BEFSR41.

Dave
BTW: Verizon has one of the best News Servers in the ISP industry. Your loss...
