Hello there, I need help - well, my puta does.

Windows Service pack 2 was installed last week, and now my net connection
(using a 56k modem) has fallen from 53.2 down to 31.2 k... and it just wont
connect any faster.

I have checked all internet settings, and modem settings, and simply can't
work out what has changed.

Can any one help - Jaz

Hi there, it has been known that a faulty telephone may interfere with
connection on dial up (it did with a friend of mine). Disconnect everything
except your internet connection on the line and see if that improves things.
If it does, then reconnect the other devices one at a time to see if one of
the telephones/fax machine or whatever may be causing the problem.

Otherwise you may have to contact your ISP and/or the service provider for
your telephone line.

Thanks T for the reply...

I am fairly certain it has something to do with the result of Service Pack 2
.... as this was the exact time things changed. (The jackpoint the modem is
connected to was replaced last year - so it shouldn't be this at all).

I might try and ring my ISP and see if any others have had this problem.

Recently At&T, Verizon becmae a monopoly on the Dial up phone numbers. All
Dial up phone numbers have been changed to only allow Dial up 56k modem speed
to not exceed 33.6kbps. It is best displayed in SBC decloration also known as
Pacific Bell who said, if you have a V.92 56K modem, you will not be permited
to access the new lines of V.90 ISDN lines and are being restricted to a
maximum of 33.6kbps, in other words you must now sign up for their high speed
internet or suffer slow speed. Google SBC Dial up numbers and then read their
notice. I know it sucks as not all locations is high speed internet avalible,
I will not receive it here for another 5 years.

Jaz here is the actual words from SBC

Dial-In Locations where there are Different 56K and 33.6 Kbps Dial-In Numbers
If you have a modem with 33.6 speeds or less, or if you have an x2
technology 56K modem, you must continue to dial into the current 33.6 Kbps
dial-in number. The reason for this is that our 56K modem pools have been
optimized for K56flex or v.90 modems only. Users who attempt to dial into our
56K modem pool and who do not have a K56flex or v.90 modem will not see
speeds associated with 56K and may experience significant connection and
performance difficulties. Go to the 56K FAQ for help on finding out what kind
of modem you have.
