I successfully installed SP3 for XP and then did another search for updates.
Now it's telling me that I need a bunch of updates for SP2. I thought they
were included in SP3...

There is NO SP3 - do you mean the 50+ updates after install of SP2?

SP3 is for Windows 2000... NOT for Windows XP..

That's what I thought was strange. According to other posts, XP SP3 isn't
supposed to be available until 2007. I just checked the update results and it
says it's OFFICE XP SP3. I take it from other posts that this is different
from XP SP3? Does that mean that I have to continue updating SP2 for XP?

Judy;
Yes, you need to update both.
Microsoft Office XP and Windows XP are separate and each needs to be
updated.
Windows XP is currently at SP-2 while Office XP is at SP-3.
Updating one does not negate the need for updating the other.

What have you done exactly before going any further - Do you already have
SP2 - have you just installed SP2(upgrade/update) from SP1.
If your machine came with Win XP SP2 pre-installed, have to updated
security/critical each month?

And to further muddy the waters ... if one checks the registry of an XP
SP2 system at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows XP

there is an SP3 sub-folder under XP. All it means is that the updates
present in the SP3 folder will be included in the future release of
Service Pack 3 for XP.
When that will come out is anybody's guess

Hello Mow
Re the OPs prob, I have two links below from my scvhost prob folder.
The first has a series of fixes, each with its own twist - I eventually
found it in a folder where I had put it in July.
The solutions seem very simple now having read some far more complicated
since, but the updated info on this site seems to show a great deal of
success, even up to present day.

A link from the above brought up this which seems to be for an ident. prob.
but far more complicated.
To my untrained brain, it is similar to suggestions already in this group,
but you would know better than I :-)

Thanks for the links, antioch. Unfortunately, there is no one fix for
the svchost issue. For some, renaming SoftwareDistribution works.
For some, deleting all contents of SD works.
Others report disabling the AU service, visiting WU, and then starting
the service works.
Some say it's an issue with the processor ...
I've been trying to track it down using ProcessExplorer, but my laptop
no longer has the issue.

Stay tuned for any further developments

Hi Mow
Thank you for taking the time to read these links
That's what I thought - if YOU and other helpers in this group, cannot sort
the wheat from the chaff, what chance is there for the computer users such
as myself. None I fear. If I had the OPs problem, I would finish up going
round in ever decreasing circles and disappearing up my own 'rsea'.
After sending my post I went back into the web and this partic prob goes on
and on - I think it has produced more activity than WGA/WGAN did.
Update group is my favourite 'read' at the moment.
There is so much going on and much to learn.
Take care
