After installing XP's SP2 I noticed under Outlook Express... Tools, Options,
Maintenance, the "Compact messages when there is [20] percent wasted space"
is gone!? What is the purpose of removing this feature?

Because auto-compact caused problems for a lot of people. You can do a
compact manually whenever you want - tools, options, maintenance....

OK. I'm assuming you mean causing errors and such. I never had a problem
with it. It seemed to take about 30+ minutes before it auto-compacted
messages. Without it (guessing) will simply allow messages take more space
on the hard drive, but with today's hard drives getting larger that's no big
deal.
Thank you Lanwench, Dave

No prob. It apparently was a problem for a lot of people - I myself never
had any issues with it. Then again, I had too many probs with XP SP2 on this
old laptop & took it off - now I'm waiting for my lottery winnings so I can
buy a new laptop.
