SP2 Won't Install - "Access Denied"

I am having difficulty getting SP2 to install...getting an error message that
says "Access Denied" and the SP2 installation gets rolled back. I also
noticed that I cannot do a "Ctrl-Alt-Del" maneuver...get an error message
that says "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator".

The pc in question belongs to a client who used someone else (prior to my
coming on the scene this week) for maintenance of this machine. My client
told me yesterday (after I my unsuccessful attempt to download and install
SP2) that his computer used to have two admin user accounts and that my
predecessor deleted one of them...which, I'm guessing, was probably the
"main" administrator account. My intuition tells me that the one and only
remaining admin account does not have full admin priviledges...in spite of
the fact that is shows it's an Adminstrator account under the User Accounts
in the control panel. Assuming my crude analogy is correct, does anyone have
any suggestions as to how to update or reset this admin account so that it
has full admin priviledges? I'm trying to avoid having to perform any
editing of the registry as this is a somewhat foreign maneuver for me and I
know, if nothing else, that A LOT OF DAMAGE can be done if the registry is
edited improperly.

Thanks for the article. Read all of it (a few times) and many of the related
links (like how to go about editing the registry).

I'm a fairly advanced user but have yet to try editing the registry. I know
little about this process but do know one undisputable fact...screwing up the
registry can be a very big & costly mistake. Hence my trepidation. But I must
try it nonetheless as I cannot get this machine updated since apparently one
or more of the registry keys do not have the appropriate permissions.

Wish me luck...I think I'm gonna need it.

Thanks again for your ongoing support...it's truly appreciated.

I downloaded and installed the SubInAcl executable into the specified
location, created the reset.cmd text file (under the same folder) and ran the
reset.cmd from dos. Program ran fine and seemed to reset the registry keys.
But, unfortunately, I once again ran into the same "Access is Denied" problem
when I tried to re-install SP2. So, I'm going to try enabling verbose logging
(already got the KB article on "how to") and will re-install again and then
check for the SPECIFIC keys that are failing and will TRY to update the
permissions just for those specific keys.

Gotta tell you... I barely knew what the registry was, much less how to edit
it, a few short days ago...and in that intervening time, I feel like I've
traveled light years already in my understanding. Thanks again for your help.

Hi there,

I am not sure if the following applies to your situation but I had a simular
experience when installing SP2 under Vista RC1. The solution in this case is
simple:

Grant full persmissions to 'current-user' on the following 3 files:

'D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio
8\VC\bin\x86_amd64\vcvarsx86_amd64.bat'
'D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\Tools\vsvars32.bat'
'D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bin\sdkvars.bat'

After install of VS2005 (under Vista) these files are 'readonly' to the
'users'

I also got a couple of 'VS needs to run as administrator' warnings, just
press 'continue' here.
