SP2 won't install

Got a computer with Vista Business preinstalled -- restored to
factory-fresh configuration: no service packs. Installed SP1, then
numerous other updates. I looked for an SP2 but didn't find it so
assumed that there wasn't one. Then this morning there was a message
that SP2 was available for installation. Gave it the go-ahead, but at
stage 3 of installation after the reboot I got a message that the SP
couldn't be installed and that changes were being reverted.

Google indicates that this a not-uncommon problem, but I am wondering
whether it's even necessary/advisable to try to install SP2 in view of
all the other updates that post-date SP2. Is there still stuff in SP2
that's worth having?

Forgot to mention that the only anti-virus software I installed is
Microsoft Security Essentials.

how to troubleshoot windows vista and windows server 2008 service pack
installation issues
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366

free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
windows vista SP2 issues until august 30, 2010.

availability of chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic
location.

some issues may require more advanced support for which there is a charge.

go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=13014&gprid=582034> &
select appropriate category (i.e., download issue; installation issue; issues
after you install a service pack).

Double-check driver versions. There are some that were not compatible
with various SP's. Audio and Network drivers were the most common.

It's OK. I already have a set of disks from the manufacturer to upgrade
it from Vista to XP Pro.

The Lenovo/IBM tech support guy agreed with me that replacing Vista by
XP is an UPgrade. And, since Lenovo originally offered the XP
alternative and the machine is still in warranty, I was able to get the
whole set of disks (8 CDs!!) that should make it just like the ones that
came from the factory with XP.
