SP2 won't stay hidden and other questions

First of all, can somebody tell me why SP2 won't stay hidden? I have hidden
the update twice, and both times it has somehow become unhidden, though it
has yet to offer it again the second time it happened.

Second, I would like some clarification on what this means: "The original
version of Windows XP, commonly known as Windows XP Gold or Windows XP
Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version, reached the end of its extended
security update support life cycle on September 30, 2004." Does this mean
that if you don't have at least SP1, you won't receive any more updates? What
about if you have some of SP1 installed? I have most of it installed, but I
believe there's about 1.9 MB left of SP1 to install. (I don't want SP2.)
Should I go ahead and install what remains?

Third, how can you tell if you have IE 6 or IE 6 SP1?

And fourth, AU recently popped up with two updates (the cumulative patch for
IE and something else I can't remember at the moment) but when I go to the
website, there are still three updates left. Why weren't these downloaded
with the others? They all came out on the twelfth.

Thank you for any help. ^_^

To avoid that Windows Updates/Automatic Updates tries to install
SP2 at all (up to 12. April 2005):

Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of Windows XP SP2 to a PC
Through Automatic Updates and Windows Update
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Run the XPSP2BlockerTools.exe in the link above. It will extract
several files to the folder you specify.

Then run XPSP2Blocker.exe to activate the blockage (it will create
the registry value described in the link above).

This will not block you from installing SP2 from e.g. the SP2 CD
later on, just from Windows Updates/Automatic Updates...

That is correct...

It isn't possible to install SP1 in bits and pieces, either you have it,
or you don't.

If you run WINVER from Start/Run, does it say "Service Pack 1"
somewhere in that dialog box?

If it doesn't, you don't have SP1 installed.

In IE, in the menu, select Help/About Internet Explorer.

If you have IE SP1, you will find the text "SP1" listed in
the "Update Versions" line.

a) you need it

b)FAQ
I am still using Windows XP, but extended security update support ended on
September 30th, 2004. However, this bulletin has a security update for this
operating system version. Why is that?

The original version of Windows XP, commonly known as Windows XP Gold or
Windows XP Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version, reached the end of its
extended security update support life cycle on September 30, 2004. However,
the end-of-life occurred very recently. In this case, the majority of the
steps that are required to address this vulnerability were completed before
this date. Therefore, we have decided to release a security update for this
operating system version as part of this security bulletin.

We do not anticipate doing this for future vulnerabilities that may affect
this operating system version, but we reserve the right to produce updates
and to make these updates available when necessary. It should be a priority
for customers who have this operating system version to migrate to supported
operating system versions to prevent potential exposure to vulnerabilities.

c)in IE menu\help\about IE

d) Don't know what they are and what's already installed.
