SP2 is a solid, secure release. It is a major "Critical Update"
for Windows XP and updates about 5 million lines of code,
enabling much stronger security, stability, and affords a tad better
performance benefit. SP2 was extensively tested on hundreds of
thousands of various computer configurations over a period of
many, many months. The final release of SP2 is fine and you should
not have problems installing it.

I installed it about 10-14 days ago. You will have a learning process to
undergo because there are significant changes especially in security. I see
no reason for you to wait

I would not recommend a mass rollout without extensive testing on the types
of machines/software combinations that you have. It doesn't seem to be a
disaster like NT SP2 was. But it isn't like other SPs. It has far more
problems because it implements a massive amount of changes. The SP is
272,391 in size making it rival the OS install. You pick up a firewall as
well. Necessary? Perhaps, but don't set unrealistic expectations that this
will go a smooth as other service packs. It will not unless you are talking
only a few computers. This is more like an OS upgrade than a service pack.

Regards,
Jack T.

My original response send more than 12h ago hasn't appear, so I'm sending
this again.

Yes, for two more reasons:

1) "The U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT), the
federally-funded security clearinghouse and alert center, put its two cents
in this week and recommended that every Windows XP user install the Service
Pack 2 update...."
US-CERT Urges All To Install XP SP2 2004-09-02
http://www.internetweek.com/breaking...cleID=46200889

2) I read that future updates would be built on the assumption that SP2 had
been installed.

Hi

There will still be updates for SP1 a long time to come.

Lifecycle Supported Service Packs
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=lifesupsps

states that WinXP SP1 Pro will be fully supported for 2 years after
the release of SP2, and one year for WinXP SP1 Home.

This means you will get critical security updates for SP1 at least
up to August 2006 (and I would think that this would be relevant
for WinXP SP1 Home as well, as there is very little difference
between Pro and Home in this aspect).
