I installed SP2 on one of my two computers without a problem.
On the second one, an old (2000) Gateway with an AMD 1100MHz (32bit)
processor and some updated cards, the SP2 install failed completely.
The actual installation seemed to go well until the reboot. The system got
to the first Windows screen, the one with the moving bar near the bottom
and after a few seconds the machine rebooted, with a quick blue screen of
death that didn't stay long enough for me to read. I was unable to start
it in any mode, safe, last good boot, etc. Same thing - a forced reboot
after a few seconds in that initial boot window.
Fortunately I had made a full Ghost image before attempting the update, so
I only lost a few hours, but it's clear that my machine is not SP2
compliant and I am not interested in experimenting for MS's sake.
I will simply hope that my problem is not unique and that there will be an
SP2a or something that might work. Otherwise, I shall remain content with
SP1 and a working computer.
If you are going to install SP2 - be warned - a drive image is far
superior to simply backing up your files. If you have a problem like mine,
you would have to reinstall everything which could literally take days,
whereas a drive image restore takes less than an hour. My main drive has
about 25 Gig of data and programs on it and I wouldn't want to even think
about reinstalling everything and then having to do all those updates and
so on.
The key word is IMAGE the drive before installing SP2

There is no plan for SP-2a.

"but it's clear that my machine is not SP2"
Are you sure?

Have a look at the Service Pack Installation Checklist:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

If you still have problems and have an extra hard drive, you could
install Windows XP and then immediately install SP-2 from CD before
doing anything else other than update to the latest drivers.
That could help determine the cause.

Yes, I could, but I am not interested in troubleshooting a working system.
There is probably no real reason for me to update to SP2, but since it
worked on my other computer, I gave it a shot.
I suspect an old and/or incompatible processor or BIOS. One day, I may
replace the motherboard with a newer, faster one and give SP2 another
shot, but for now, once was enough.
If I see some stories in the near future about Gateway AMD 1100s and SP2,
I might see if the issues are the same as mine. If a fix is forthcoming,
I might try it.
The only major hardware changes I have made is installing a new audio
card and a combo firewire/USB2 card. I can't believe that they caused the
problem. I have the latest and last flash update for the system since it's
now obsolete, so there's nothing to be done there.
As an MSDN professional subscriber, I have a copy of virtual PC. I could
install it, I suppose, and then install another copy of XP and update that
and see what happens without doing anything at all to my existing
installation - although I could be opening another can of worms, couldn't
I ??? heh heh.
No big deal - my old Win2k box is at SP1. SP2 and higher
killed my server and I didn't want to debug that one either. It's fine at
SP1. I use it to update my various websites - never for email or even
browsing.
