The CD part number is E85-05370.
The name of the CD is "XP Professional SP3 English Patch CD Pro/Home".
Can this CD be used to install SP3 on a PC running XP Home with SP1
installed? The name implies that it is for XP Home as well as for XP
Professional

Yes, though technically it must be SP1a.
I haven't heard any say it will not work on
Home with SP1.

Thanks JS,
I saw that SP1a is listed as needed but, if you research SP1a, you will read
that it was not necessary to install SP1a if SP1 was installed. I am going to
purchase the CD and install it when I install my new Hard Drive. The system
Recovery CD-ROMs will load Windows XP Home with SP1. I will post my results
if you wish me luck!

The difference between sp1 and sp1a was that the latter does not include
the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. This was deleted as the result of
the settlement of a lawsuit brought against Microsoft by Sun. I suspect
(but do not know) that the update to sp3 will work starting from sp1
(rather than sp1a) but MS probably cannot legally advise people to use sp1.
