sp3 for xp won't download for me from the windows update site. It starts,
and then about 3 seconds later, it stops and says the update failed. It
doesn't even seem like it's trying to DL it.

You should try now because I downloaded about 45 minutes ago and it
worked. Try these links:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT
Professionals and Developers:

Hope this helps.

Still doing the same thing on the update site. Which one of those files do I
use? If I use the iso file, do I have to burn it to a CD for it to work?

To find out more information on why it is failing - you'll need to view the log -

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and
paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other
hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the
Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

Thanks, it looks like we're getting close, but on that support page it shows
6 different error messages that you could get to result in that error in the
log. I'm not getting any of those, or it's at least not showing them.
There's different fixes for each one, so I'm not sure how to solve it.

Another point, which i probably should have mentioned at the beginning is
that this is a fairly new laptop that came with Vista installed but was
rolled back to XP. That's probably somehow causing this, isn't it?

Wouldn't be surprised. This is rather important information that you
should've included in your first post.

How did you "roll back" from Vista to WinXP? Did the Vista machine come
with Downgrade Rights?

Have you ever been able to update via Windows Update website since you
"rolled back to XP"? Is Automatic Updates enabled?

Is WinXP SP1 or SP2 currently installed?

Not sure. It's a work computer and it was set up before I got it. Vista
causes too many problems with the software we use at work. I think it came
with downgrade rights though, and it has SP2. All other updates have worked
in the past.
