I have been trying to install SP3 on my dell with xp pro. I keep receiving 2
message boxes. One says that SP3 has detected that one or more protected
files have been modified and that SP3 contains updated versions of those
files. I click yes to overwrite the current files. and the program
continues to install. The next warning box I receive is the one that stops
me. It says:

Setup cannot copy the file dumprep.exe.
Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert
'Windows XP System Files'in the drive you specify.
Copy files from:
c:\windows\system32
(there's a drop down menu with the choice of a:\)

I have no idea what to do with this. Any ideas?

Suggest you post to the Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) forum:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...oxpsp/threads/

If you'd care to troubleshoot the installation issue yourself:

Pack 3

See: " Cannot install Service Pack 2 "
The logs for the installation of SP3 are in the same location as they
were for SP2.

To ensure a trouble free installation, strongly suggest you download the
full standalone SP3 package and *save* it:

Then read these 2 articles *prior* attempting to install SP3 again:
