XP-Home PC. Won't install, or even download for that matter, the SP3 update.
Any clue?

You are not offered the option to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 when you
use the Windows Update Web site or Automatic Updates

What TaurArian said, plus...

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

No, the option is there when I do Windows Update and click the "notification
icon" in my toolbar tray. The window pops up "preparing to download" then
"failed".

This appears to have tacked onto someone else's post which was previously
SP3 Update.

Ingse, If it's just the Viewer update that is causing your problem, most
likely the cause is that it can't find the original source files.

Suggest you redown load the viewer, install the same and if required apply
the update.

Oh, go grind your axe elsewhere!

1. The thread to which you refer above (which really was about your issues
in this thread in WinXP General newsgroup, where said issues were in fact
resolved:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...67dbadf75919fc)
had NOTHING whatsoever to do with WinXP SP3 and dates from mid-April 2007,
more than a year before WinXP SP3 was released!

2. If you start a security update-related support incident via
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527 or by calling
1-866-PCSAFETY (US & CA only), clearly state that your problem relates to a
security update, and do NOT ask any other questions, the support is free!

That being said...

US residents can indeed obtain free support for WinSP3 installation and
compatibility issues (only) here (through May 2009):
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...3&gprid=522131

All three (3) support options (Email; Chat; Phone) are clearly marked
"No-charge: Unlimited support requests."

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your issues. Thanks.

I disagree, depending on the specific context of course. If your OS isn't
working, the only impact is that you can't use your computer until it is fixed.
If the OS is insecure, you're liable to get your bank account drained, your
identity stolen, perhaps even arrested for something someone else used your
computer to do.

YMMV.

Harry.
