sp3 via automatic updates killed my pc

I just tried installing service pack 3 via automatic updates. What I got was
a endless reboot loop with a blue screen. I could not enter safemode to try
to remove it. The drive wouldn't even let me format it and reinstall windows.
I had to plug in a old harddrive to get back online. Apparently this was a
known issue with the Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboards. Since this popped up
in automatic updates I would have thought they resolved the issue since it
goes all the way back to may and the sp3 update only appeared in my
autoupdater days ago. Is there anything I can actually do to save my old
drive or is it a lost cause? I'm not paying microsoft 59 bucks for support
after they killed my pc. Any ideas?

Since you know this is a "known issue with the Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
motherboards" - what have you done to remedy it?

http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesp...ng-xp-sp3.aspx

(BTW - SP3 was released to Automatic Updates on July 10th or so... That is
why you were not offered it until recently.)

You also may be interested in this - posted many time on the internet -
basically a hot-sheet of SP3 related issues (usually specific to a
machine/software on that machine, etc - exasperated by SP3...) and the
resolutions...

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

From PA Bear [MS MVP]:
Workarounds:

http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesp...ng-xp-sp3.aspx
[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
[WinXP SP3]."

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.
2. After booting into Safe Mode:
Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)
sc config intelppm start= disabled
--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

Some people have gotten an "Access Denied" message when trying to install
SP3... Method 3 of this article:

Beyond that - some simple maintenance might be needed - like installing the
latest hardware drivers from your hardware vendors...

Let's just go over that again, to make sure I've understood you; you booted the
original installation CD, and found that you couldn't reformat the drive?

If so, then the problem is that your hard drive has developed a physical fault.
The SP3 install involves a lot of hard drive activity, which probably pushed
it over the edge, but it would have failed anyway sooner or later. Is the drive
still in warranty?

Harry.

Hi

Just in case you gave up on your old HD and still have it. The same happened to me yesterday, with the same ASUS mobo.

This solved it for me:

scroll down to the second last post from Naushad Unni, and do all of that.

<sigh> who are you talking to and about what? I don't know what forum you
are posting through but you should understand that it leaches off Microsoft
News groups.

Not only did you reply to a message and leave none of the information from
that message quoted - you even changed the subject line. What you
essentially did was start a new posting for most people reading these
newsgroups with normal 'TTL' set on their newsreaders of choice.

For those that care - here is the original thread - including the subject
change - archived in its entirety for an indefinite amount of time:

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...a80c619ab30888

In the future - especially if you plan on refering to the previous posting
so specifically - you may wish to quote some of the prior posting in your
response (like I did yours above) or leave a link to the archived posting in
your response (like I did above) to help those who might read your response
put together what you are talking about...
