Speakers do not work when headphones are plugged in.

I have windows 2000. My speakers are located on my monitor, when I tried to
change so the sound would go to my headphones program would not accept the
change applied?

where did you plug your headphones? do you have headphone jacks on your
monitor and on the PC? are the speakers on your monitor working fine? if you
connect the headphones directly to the PC, what happens?
