Speech recognition disables audio

Here's an interseting case. When speech recognition is on and in the "sleep"
mode, it will randomly stop working and cause all audio to cease functioning
as well. Device manager indicates that everything is working well, but fails
to play any test tones when attempted. The only way to correct the problem is
to restart the computer. Dell could not help me solve this and I have tried
everything, including the following: disabled the onboard audio and purchased
sound card, tried two different microphones and different speakers, updated
drivers, disabled devices, reinstalled windows home premium, upgraded to
windows vista ultimate. Let me know if you have any suggestions or even an
inkling as to what the problem might be. Thanks!

Hi,

Is DXDIAG showing no problems?

I can only think, after everything that you have done, is to contact
Microsoft & report the issue. There must be others having this issue, who
haven't reported it.
If not, then it is an issue, with DELL and how they modify the Motherboard &
BIOS
for their OEM needs.

I would think Vista SP1 will probably include a fix, if you can get
Microsoft to
generate this issue, on thier Dell PC like yours.

There are no problems in DXDIAG. I have found that if I disable the speakers
I can use the microphone with voice recognition with no problems. Then, if I
disable the microphone and enable the speakers, I can listen to sound with no
problem. However, having both enabled with speech recognition running (even
if no sound in or out) will cause the audio to stop responding. Should I try
another sound card or just give up at this point? Dell was of no help. Tech
support "worked" on issue for 2 weeks with no solution.
