SPEECH REGOCNITION and DICTATION

I have started the Speech Recognition and have used all the "training" apps,
and it responds well wen I do this. However, when I instruct it to Open
Wordpad, it does so, but then when I start dictating, it says, "What was
that?" continuously and doesn't enter a thing even though all the training
went well.

What could be wrong? It will close the app, open another, show numbers,
etc., but when I have it open word pad and try to dictate a letter, for
example, it will go to "new line" or "new paragraph", but as soon as I say,
"Dear....." all I get after that is "What was that?" and it goes no further!
How aggravating!!

Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks.

Yes, you are using the speech wreckognition and dictation 'features' in
Vista. They are the worse speech tools known to mankind and are
extremely sub par! Use a 3rd party solution, it will work much better!

I've found that success with the speech recognition feature is very
dependent on the quality of the microphone that you use. When I use a
reasonably good microphone, accuracy rates are better than 99% -- in fact,
it's so good, that, when I've shown it to some of the secretaries here at my
office, they thought it was a trick. I was doing natural speech dictation,
i.e. not pausing after each word, just talking, and getting a perfect
transcription including difficult words, e.g. legal terms of art. If I use
a poor microphone, e.g. my bluetooth headset, accuracy rates fall to the
"won't even work at all" range.

Actually its pathetic! Considering how the user talks to us and to the
computer at the same time and can't figure out why the computer can't
tell the difference!
This video is more about an idiot user than anything else.
Also its old.

It's very funny, but a perfect example of how NOT to use speech
recognition/dictation. He doesn't speak at a consistent speed or volume,
when he gets angry he changes his inflection, he makes noises and
extraneious comments and, it appears, he's using a cheapie headphone/mike.
Needless to say, my results are far better.

That video is so damn funny I almost wet my pants. Now we know why it
took Microsoft 5 years to write Vista. You see HOW they try to write
code. At seven minutes in you guessed it, I got a IE7 needs to close
error, nagging needlessly about the Flash Player. Damn Microsoft, what
the f... is wrong with your crap if it can play something for seven
minutes then only then does it first discover it has a 'problem' with
the player that it used that long? The problem is Microsoft has too
many monkeys as wannabe software engineers.

The video clearly shows the user talking into a microphone, birdbrain.

No, wrong again. It shows Microsoft can't write decent voice
recognition software. I have some experience in this area having been
a beta tester for one of IBM's early attempts in this area years ago.

No Frank, you're just a clueless dickhead that has some absurd need to
try to defend Microsoft incompetence. You really should get paid since
you waste so much of your time being a Microsoft shill.

Between the fact that he keeps making noise in the background, keeps

an engine designed for English rather then PERL, I think it did about as
well as you could expect it to do.

Changing tone, volume and pitch constantly doesn't help either.

Is it a replacement for natural speech? No... Learning to type takes
some training, so does voice recognition.

I suspect you could do far better if you could indicate to the computer
whether you're wanting your speech to be treated as literal text, or
meta/instructions.

In other words, how is the computer supposed to know the difference
between "I", "capital I" "capitol I" "capital eye" "capitol eye"?

If you want to have even more fun, try writing a document describing how
to use voice recognition using voice recognition.

Priceless, and my experience was it worked very well during training (I
have an "English" accent so didn't expect miracles) but oh dear, trying
to do an email or a news post was hopeless. Took ages to proof read and
proof read again and then try to correct, which as the video showed was
a hiding to nothing... so back to the keyboard.

The sad thing is that in XP, MS voice recognition really wasn't that
bad. I use it on my tablet at home (tablet PC edition 2003) and on my
other tablet at work (tablet PC edition 2005), and it works pretty well.
It's not the best voice recognition software I've used, but it sure
gets the job done better than Vista's voice wreckognition does! I
wonder what they did to break it in vista?
