I do not see your original post anywhere...but if you are looking to spend
under $1000

and are running Vista on a machine with 448megs of RAM...then your least
expensive option would be to either add more
RAM to your current machine

or to simply use your same machine but run XP on it

Thank you all for replying to my "Speed" post. I have followed your
instructions and I find I have 448 MB of RAM.
Could you recommend a good laptop/notebook for Surfing, Email, and Word
Processing With wireless capability for under $1000.

There are literally hundreds you can buy for way less than $1000. You don't
say what country you are in, but here is a sample and you can find similar
results by searching other companies.

The first thing you need to do is remove all the Trialware, Junkware and
Bloatware that Gateway installs by default.
After that, your new laptop will run, not especially fast, but acceptably.
Compared to the one you've been using, it'll be a speed demon.

Get rid of any anti-virus software that comes with it and download and
install Avast!. That along with AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy used on
a regular basis should keep your new laptop in tip-top shape.

Get another 1600 megs in there, and you're good.

Well, at least another 576 megs! I have an old ThinkPad T41 laptop with 1
gig - Vista runs fine.

Of course, I have 4 gig on this desktop - and I actually want more (lots of
VMs in VPC for my development work). Unless the laptop is your only
machine, 1 gig is fine.

No, that isn't correct. How much RAM you need for good performance,
with Vista or with any other Windows version, depends on what apps you
run. *You* may find that 1GB is fine for *your* workload, but for the
great majority of people running Vista with a range of common business
applications, 1GB gives minimal performance and 2GB is a great
improvement.

But certainly 448MB (512MB with 64MB of onboard video) is completely
inadequate for anyone who does more than play solitaire.
