Speeding Up Vista...

Does anyone have any recommendations on speeding up Vista and programs I run
on my Vista machine?

I think programs have been slowing down over the last 6 months since buying
my computer (it had Vista already installed on it).

Are there tools I should run on a regular basis (defragmention, etc...) to
keep this from happening?

SP1 will boost performance (it will be available mid march)

clear up your disk with ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ FREE
degragment with http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag FREE

and remove things you dont need in the startup by going to the start button>
and in the search box typing MSCONFIG then press enter

go to the start up tab and remove checkmarks from things you dont need that
startup with your pc.. these changes of course are revarsable

OR better yet download the AUTORUNDS utility from microsoft

when you run this do this setting> Options > hide microsoft Entries, then
press the REFRESH icon on the toolbar
then go to the LOGON tab and uncheck the ones you dont need...

but not the first ones, only from
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ru n" and under

I must say the developers at Microsoft do have a sense of humour.

Don't install any defragmenters that are FREE. You most likely will slow
your system down even more. Vista has a built in defragmenter.

Check your system for malware with MICROSOFT APIs, not 3-rd party
applications.

There is a chance some suc*kers are taking your CU time to do their own
malicious work without your being aware of it.

Recently when I ran Spybot Search and Destroy (the only FREE anti-malware
app one can trust) on one of my Win2K partitions it found not less than 311
malware products. Spybot S&D removed them all in no time.

That Win2K partition of mine is a legacy partition with some software left
still. It has ZoneAlarm which I neglected to renew. SB S&D took care of it.
Also I ran Microsoft Malicious Software removal toll which found nothing
after SB S&D run.

feedback
so you can see whats going on.

My policy is not to use any 3-rd party anti-malware except Spybot S&D.
Windows Vista offers sufficient protection against malicious software
writers some of them I am sure watch this forum very carefully.

Download Microsoft Windows Baseline Security Analyzer. It is Beta 2.1 for
Vista and I think it is safe to download. Run it.

It will give you all your vulnerabilities, especially in your firewall
settings. You should read the report and if it suggests any changes, you
should consider them.
Your Windows firewall setting will be analyzed.

Download Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830). It
will want to run upon install. Choose the FULL scan although it may give you
a threatening message that it might take a few hours. It will scan your
entire computer in about half an hour or less if you do not have a lot of
stuff in it.

Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy, a great piece of software
which is free for individuals but corporations pay fees. You may be asked
for donations but it is up to you. It is very up to date and every week you
will have to download new updates, sometimes even more often. You should
check for updates every time you run it. It will give you all su*kers
leached into your registry and ask you if you wanted to remove them. Many of
them have masqueraded themselves under MS Windows names like
Windows.something. Do not hesitate to kill them all. You can trust SB S&D.

website and they try to download some kind of a Trojan to you SB S&D will

On a more sober note it is also possible that accumulation of many
applications on your machine over 6 month period could have resulted in some
slowdown as well. At least it may be a contributing factor. Some of them may
be running all the time for no reason at all and you are not even aware of
it.

It does not exclude the possibility of malware doing it as well.
