On the Mac we have a system-wide spell checker that works for all text areas.
In FF 2.0 there's now a spell checker for text boxes
In Windows Live Writer there's an integrated spellcheck
In IE you can hook in third part spellcheckers like ASpell and IESpell
Office includes a pretty good spell checker
.....
But Messenger is still the last bastion of poor spelling.

While I'd love to see an OSX style system-wide spell checker enabled by
installing Word (or to keep the anti-trust police happy any third party
service that the user installs to plug the gap) that can be used by IE, WLM,
WLW etc (to avoid maintining multiple dictionaries of those special words)
short-term I'd be really happy to see an active spell check in WLM....
especially for when talking to business contacts

Greetings,

This one has been on the books for ages.

Someone actually produced a third-party spell check for Windows Messenger (Windows Live
Messenger) which worked okay, but interfered with the UI a bit. There's also been some other
recent attempts to add it to Messenger via Messenger Plus but the performance really wasn't
usable.

There are lots of issues involved with adding spell check from licensing to localization
which is the reason why it keeps not becoming a reality in Messenger, not to mention the
"text speak" that some people use. Eventually Windows will get an internal spell check and
this will be dealt with then.

Greetings,

Yes, I agree as well, Spell checker, as well as grammar checker for Windows
Live Messenger would be an excellent feature to implement.

Is there a time frame at implementing a release of this built in spell checker.

I haven't seen anything in the Beta Vista release indicating that this
feature will be available.

Cheers,

Mark

Interesting, but is spelling what we are talking about or is it really
autocomplete?

both?
IMO on-the-fly spell check is probably more useful (auto-correct) for IM but
autocomplete would be a timesaver (and maybe encourage people to use better
spelling and grammar on the web!)
