Vista's I/O capability is pathetic. RAID-0 or RAID-5 can make up for it.

This is true for any OS that does RAID.

It is *best* when the OS see's one virtual drive created by the hardware rather than the OS.
For one, the OS must deal with the overhed. RAID controllers will have its owen CPU
performing the operation.

By having virtual drive created by the hardware you will have less problems when dealing
with OS problems or upgrading the OS.

For example. I had a NT 4.0 Server running RAID 5 on a controller and another array via the
OS. I had to upgrade the server to Win2003 Server. I had no problems with the data on the
RAID 5 controller. However I had to rebuild the data from a robotic tape backup system for
the RAID controlled by the OS. That took an entire weekend of work.
