Have you tried System Restore to a Restore Point dated before the problem
occurred?
There is also an option in the F8 boot screen to restore to the last known
good configuration. I think (not sure) that one can't be undone, unlike a
regular System Restore.
Have you tried SFC (System File Checker)?
For a temporary work-around, you could share the photos etc. across the
network and print them from the XP computer...
