Spybot & WU Failures

Hello,

I have had a problem downloading any WindowsUpdates for months on my second
computer. I then installed the latest version of Spybot - Search and
Destroy 1.3 on this machine, scanned for spyware and removed everything
(there was only 3 and were obvious cookies and Alexa, which I don't use much
nowadays). I then "Immunized" my system. Since then I've not been able to
download WindowsUpdate. I have tried de-Immunized my system and tried WU
but still doesn't work so the damage is permanent.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution? I've been e-mailing
MS support for weeks and we've not found a solution as yet. Is there a way
to completely re-set WindowsUpdate (without reinstalling WindowsXP).

Hope someone can help?

Kol

Hi - Spybot shouldn't have anything to do with this. You've provided a lot
of good detail, but you haven't mentioned what your actual symptoms are when
you try to use WU.....

Do you really want to get into it? MS Support haven't worked it out from
many, many exchanges of e-mails. ;-)

Basically I cannot download any updates, the install history gives error
80072F78 for everything I try and download. I select the patches I want to
download, click on Install, then the dialog box pops up and pretty much
instantly says failed.

MS said it was ZoneAlarm, but this machine had ZA on it and worked fine up
until I can Spybot. But I did uninstall ZA on my second machine and gave it
a go again, but no luck. We've tried lots of things, but nothing is
working. :-(

OfficeUpdate works fine though.

Hi,

This is a shot in the dark, but have you changed the MTU settings at all? I
had a problem on one computer before with the MTU settings and windows
Updates wouldn't download or install. I then changed them from their
default setting of 1500 to 1450 and haven't had any problems. I used DrTCP
to change the MTU settings.

Spybot is not the culprit, the immunize wouldn't affect the Windows Update.

OK, I'll give this a go, but why can you think it has suddenly stopped
working, the only thing I did was the Spybot stuff.

Hi,

I have no idea, you might have had a spyware program that was using the part
of the windows update and modified it for its use. Then when you used
spybot or anything else that looks for spyware, found it, removed and the
original file used for windows update was damaged. The spybot S&D is
designed to find and remove the scumware and the immunize to help prevent it
from returning, unfortunately, it doesn't repair any of the damage files the
scumware could have affected. You might have to try Start>Run> sfc /scannow
, that might help or a repair install as well. You have to remember, one of
the things spyware creators does not want you to do, is update or fix
windows to prevent their crap from installing, so something using the update
files might have been targeted.

Hi, Kolin,

One wild guess re your Spybot questions - Put back the "Alexa related" file
with Spybot restore. Somewhere I read that IE "needs" this.

One suggestion - Post your questions in the Spybot Forums. Like this one,
there are some really knowledgeable and wonderfully helpful people there..

Hi,

EI doesn't need Alexa, I have them removed with my spyware scanners and
never had any problems with windows updates.

Hi there,

Yeah, where did you read that, that is very bizarre? IE definitely doesn't
need Alexa.
