The good folks at "Where is the forum for..." suggested I post here.

I need to install the SQL2008 Upgrade Advisor on a fully patched WinXP SP3
machine.

I tried running the SQLUA.msi and got the message that

"This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer
service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer
version of the Windows installer service."

I checked the msiexec and it's showing I'm running version 3.01. So, I
downloaded the Windows Installer version 4.5
(WindowsServer2003-KB942288-v4-x86.exe) and ran it and get this

"The vrsion of Windows you have installed does not match the update you
are trying to install."

So, I downloaded the Windows Installer 3.1v2
(WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) and get this when I run it

"Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is
newer than the update your are applying.
There is no need to install this update."

How am I to install the upgrade advisor?

Try installing this version of 4.5 For Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows
XP Service Pack 3 (32-bit platforms):
x86 Platform: WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

from here-
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

You tried the Windows 2003 version not the XP version.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately I've been to that page and downloaded the WinXP version
several times. But, it's an msu file and my system doesn't know what to do
with it. I've tried passing the msu into msiexec, but it doesn't like that.

How can I make an msu run where there is no MSI 4?

You are mistaken. It is an exe. See
WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe The msu files are for Vista and W2K8.

Go take a look.

That worked. I googled the file name you listed and went to the page, and I
could swear I've been to that page a dozen times already, but there was the
exe. I ran it and the Upgrade Advisor installed w/o problem.

Thanks.
