My machine has recently been connected to an SBS Premium server with SQL
Server 2000 installed. Following this event, when I went to the update site, it refreshed the copy of Genuine Microsoft that downloads from the update site. Following this event, updates proceeded to obtain SQL Server 2005 SP1. In some ways this is a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, I am having issues with this service pack. Now each time I am at the site, I receive a failed update of SQL Server 2005 SP1. There are other factors involved with this update. On previous occasions, this update caused my default instance (Developer SQL Server 2005) on my workstation (it should be a workstation - that is separate issue) to revert from being recognized as SQL Server 2005 to the version of SQL Server 2000. Moreover, instead of recognizing the default instance of 2005 and the related databases, it picked up the only copy of SQL Server 2000 that I had installed on the machine which is an instance of MSDE. The databases in my 2000 instance are the ones showing as the default instance of 2005 and the version indicates version 8 instead of version 9. I highly suspect MSDEa as being to blame here. The instance of SQL Server 2000 that appears was installed using MSDEa as part of an overall installation of an application that uses SQL Server 2000's MSDE. Nevertheless, the effect of this SP1 of SQL Server 2005 should not be failing nor should my service point to a previous version each time I update with SP1 of 2005. The second time this occured was after connecting to the SBS Premium's copy of SQL Server 2000. Referring to the first time this occurred, I was able to correct the error by complete uninstalling SQL Server 2005 developer from my machine and then reinstalling it and then updating to SP1. This is not the case on this occasion. In this case, I am unable to re-install SP1 at all as can be indicated from the updates site log and from my own testing here with the actual SP1 downloaded from the site. I also find it odd that it occurred when another default instance of SQL Server appeared on the newly created network (SBS Premium 2003). At first I suspected it may have to do with whether the SBS Premium copy of SQL Server 2000 was a Standard or Enterprise version and that ISA 2004 would only tolerate a single default instance over the network. Although this is a possibility, I find it unlikely as I have been in other networks where a client machine in the network was able to run a default instance of SQL Server 2000 MSDE without issue. If the upgrade path is truly backward compatible, it would rule this out as an issue. Checking the log, I have pulled out four significant entries... The first is the log before the SBS Premium was installed. The second is the first update failure that occurred based on the proxy settings required to access the internet from the client. This third example shows a successful update of the Windows Genuine tool (which had, incidentally, been installed on a previous update last year), and then finally, the failure code that is repeated throughout the log. In my log, I have the following which may or may not have meaning here: 2006-05-25 01:54:36 1040 bac Setup * IsUpdateRequired = No 2006-05-25 01:54:38 1040 bac Setup Found non-managed non-WU Service registered with AU 2006-05-25 01:54:39 1040 bac Setup *********** Setup: Checking whether self-update is required *********** 2006-05-25 01:54:39 1040 bac Setup * Inf file: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\SelfUpdate\Registe red\musetup.inf 2006-05-25 01:54:39 1040 bac Setup Update NOT required for C:\WINDOWS\system32\mucltui.dll: target version = 5.8.0.2469, required version = 5.8.0.2469 2006-05-25 01:54:39 1040 bac Setup Update NOT required for C:\WINDOWS\system32\muweb.dll: target version = 5.8.0.2469, required version = 5.8.0.2469 2006-05-25 01:54:39 1040 bac Setup * IsUpdateRequired = No 2006-05-25 01:54:41 1040 bac PT +++++++++++ PT: Synchronizing server updates +++++++++++ 2006-05-25 01:54:41 1040 bac PT + ServiceId = {7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D}, Server URL = https://update.microsoft.com/v6/Clie...ce/client.asmx 2006-05-25 01:55:15 1040 bac PT +++++++++++ PT: Synchronizing extended update info +++++++++++ 2006-05-25 01:55:15 1040 bac PT + ServiceId = {7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D}, Server URL = https://update.microsoft.com/v6/Clie...ce/client.asmx 2006-05-25 01:55:18 1040 bac Agent * Found 0 updates and 20 categories in search 2006-05-25 01:55:18 1040 bac Agent ********* 2006-05-25 01:55:18 1040 bac Agent ** END ** __________________________________________________ ______________ THEN LATER: __________________________________________________ ______________ 2006-05-26 07:53:15 1032 710 Misc WARNING: SendRequest failed with hr = 80072ee7. Thank you for your feedback. I am interested in investigating this issue
further. Can you send me the SQL SP1 setup log located at %windir%\hotfix to .
