Hi..I can't connect to the net after installing the above update. The update
installs ok, but when I reboot the computer IE7 won't connect nor can I send
or receive emails. I'm connected now only because I keep restoring my
computer to the day before the update downloaded. I have disabled "automatic
Updates" otherwise my computer keeps instaling the update and then the same
problem occurs all over again. All my firewall and anti-virus settings are
good. I have even disabled them and rebooted the computer and installed the
update...but the same problem occurs. My computer is virus free and I have
run microsoft's malicious software utility...all is ok there. Anyone had
this problem and found the answer...?? My OS is XP.

Loss of connectivity has not been associated with this update as yet.
Suggest it was KB951748 that caused the issue IF Zone Alarm is installed:
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cessIssue.html

For assistance with KB948109:

And what about the fix for the same issue when you don't use ZoneAlarm (and
it was never installed on the machine)?

If they're figuring it's Zonealarm causing it for everyone, they're wrong.

Do you have any other third party firewall installed?

Oops. Ignore my last message, didn't realise you were one of the non-ZA cases.

Probably best to call Microsoft support on this one. I think I've seen one
other report of non-ZA-related loss of internet access with the July updates,
but it certainly isn't common.

Any other third-party security software installed? Have you identified the
specific update which does it, i.e., by installing and/or uninstalling them one
by one?

Harry.

No, just the XP firewall. The update has installed on some other computers
without issue, some yet have it coming, so results are unknown. The only
unique program I can think of on that computer is Alcohol 120%; it's a
little kid's computer that uses it so they don't have to be fooling with
CD's.

The log for the failure to establish or repair internet connectivity said
that a computer with the same name existed already, yet it connected to the
network and got an IP address OK using that name.

Right now, since it's working (system restore to 9 days ago) I'm going to
image the drive, then install SP3 and the other updates after that, before I
start trying to troubleshoot, or follow Harry's suggestion of using support.
It was too frustrating trying to connect or repair the connection and
getting stonewalled every time.

Gary

Thank you Mow - nice to be prepared - I have updated ZA.
Will let you know what if anything happens with Black Tuesday's KB951748.

Fair enough. Make sure you only install one update at a time, and check your
connectivity, so if you do lose the connection you know which update is most
likely to blame. Then if you like you could post back here - starting a new
thread, preferably - with the details and we'll try to help.

Harry.

Sorry guys...KB951748 is not the problem.....It is in fact KB948109....It's
sitting on my task bar as we post..just waiting for me to ok it's
instalation...then the when I do I lose IE7 connection and no emails....Then
I use system restore to to restore my settingings to what they were prior to
installing KB948109 and everything works ok again....Also I'm not using Zone
Alarm...found it conflicted with too many other programs.....and my firewall
and Anti virus settings are good....plus I lose IE7 and email even if I turn
off my anti virus and fire wall.
