I know 56K can make for long downloads, but this is ridiculous! When I go
online, the tray has the little windows update icon; hovering over it gives
the message "Downloading updates: 0%". This has been going on for over a week
now. I picture some huge file creating a logjam of sorts, but can't figure
out how to kill whatever it is that won't download, because of course neither
right- or left-clicking the dumb thing produces anything. I worry that all
sorts of updates are queued up behind this enormous file and can't be
downloaded. Anyone had this?

Hi

This might be relevant:

From: Eric Brodish [MSFT] ()
Subject: After Acception Windows XPSP2 in AU Icon disappears and nothing
is downloaded

Hi,

If you have the Automatic Updates feature configured to notify you before
download you may experience the following behavior:

1. You are notified that Windows XP Service Pack 2 is available

2. After accepting the download, nothing happens (AU icon in systray might
came up temporarily indicating 0% download)

This behavior is expected due to Windows Update controlling the rate at
which Windows XP Service Pack 2 is released. For the health of the overall
internet, the Service Pack needs to be slowly released to machines. This
prevents the internet ecosystem from becoming overburdened.

Thank You,

Eric

You could also try the following and see it helps:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"regsvr32 wuapi.dll" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok
Type "regsvr32 wups.dll" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok
Type "regsvr32 wuaueng.dll" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok
Type "regsvr32 wucltui.dll" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok
Type "regsvr32 msxml3.dll" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Restart the machine.

If that doesn't help:

You could clean out this folder (WU5's temporary download
folder) and see if that helps:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

FAQ #7 on this link explains it somewhat:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

If you want SP-2 now, follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:

My download stopped at 33%, and I don't know what to do.

the very first time I tried to install SP2 it wiped out
my entire computer and I had to call Dell so they could
help me get it back. I'm sure if I should even try it
again

A pause around 30%-40% is common and does not necessarily indicate a problem.
The download for XPSP2 runs in phases, and somewhere in that general range is
the end of one phase and the beginning of another. The download should
automatically resume after a while and continue in the background.

Thanks for using the newsgroups.
