Stand By option gone...

Can some body help me. When I go to shut down my computer there is usually a
yellow button that says stand by, a red button that says shut down, and a
green one that says restart. My standby button is not available. It is
greyed out and I can't us it. Also I have a lap top and before I reformatted
I was able to just shut the lap top and it would go on auto standby now it
just goes black and I have to manually shut it down and turn it back on.
Help.
