Start of Authority Record

We have two domain controllers in our Server 2003 environment. I moved the
FSMO roles from DC2 to DC1. We will be demoting DC2 soon and replace it
with a new domain controller with a different name.

We need to change our SOA record in DNS from DC2 to DC1. I went into DNS,
opened the Properties for the zone, and clicked on the SOA tab. I changed
the name of the primary server to DC1. DNS listed the correct name in the
SOA record.

When I checked back later, the record displayed the old name of DC2, which
is incorrect.

How do I change the SOA to a different domain controller so it retains the
information?

Hello Kate,

If you have DNS installed on DC's use AD integrated zones and all zone information
will be replicated to the other DNS/DC. Easiest and my preferred option in
a domain. Also all DNS/DC are then writable instead of a secondary DNS server
which is read-only.

Best regards

Kate,
as far as I recall, this happens to be one of idiosyncracies of
AD-integrated zones. SOA for a zone always ends up pointing to the local
domain controllers (if you check this entry on DC1, you should see that its
SOA record references itself)...

If this is AD integrated, then which ever dns server you are attached to
will show the SOA, don't worry this is normal.

Also I have an article on decommissioning a dc at:
