Start Menu Config

Apologies, this is actually a Windows 7 question, but like a few others I've
noticed, I don't see a section for that yet - Vista settings may be the same
or similar, but I skipped that OS, so I'm in the dark...

This is somewhat a trivial question, but I am very used to using keyboard
shortcuts wherever possible. In XP, I have become accustomed to hitting
<windows>, 'P', and then the first letter of whatever program I want to run
(assuming no others in the menu start with the same name) to start a few of
my applications. In moving to Windows 7, they have added a handy search
option to the start menu, so as soon as the menu is opened, any further
keystrokes go to the search box. Is it possible to disable this?

In short, I would like to be able to hit <windows>, 'P', 'I' for IE; 'Q' for
SQL, etc. I know I am being stubborn and set in my ways, but if anyone can
tell me where an option to disable this is located, I would appreciate it.

TIA

There is a Microsoft Win 7 forum somewhere on their site, as well as an
independent newsgroup that a few servers already carry,
alt.windows7.general.

For your problem - if you just don't type the 'p' you should get
approximately what you want, if I understand you correctly. Press the
Windows key, then the first letter (or letters) of the program name,
and you get a list of related names, one of which will be highlighted.
If it's the right one, press Enter.
