Is this really an improvement over the Win95-XP style where every
application just got it's own separate box when minimised?

I've used it for a couple of months now and just can't see how it's any
better, personally.

I'm new to Vista (Ultimate 32 bit) and find it great - very stable and being
a new system I suppose that's the reason for it.

However I'm not sure I like the "Compressed" start menu where all programs
are presented in one list rather than expanding menu like the days of
Windows 95,98, ME, 2000 and XP. I like the XP style best. I've been
running my XP machine with a vista "skin" so the GUI looks a lot like Vista,
but there's still a lot that is XP-ish about it of course since it's only a
"theme".

Hi,

Grouping was available in XP. For some, it's useful when they have a lot of
applications open, some of which are running the same basic program. It
reduces clutter on the taskbar and allows for users to click a single,
minimized button and select what they are looking for from a list. If you
are running only a few windows, the convenience factor is somewhat minimal.
